CATALOG NO. FR-01: Why Gradual Heat Matters for Protein Fibers

Intro

Protein fibers—wool, silk, alpaca—are living structures. Their bonds remember how they are treated. Sudden heat shocks them; gradual heat preserves them.

Process Study

Commercial cabinets, built for food service, push heat in abrupt jumps. That blunt force flattens wool: felting, uneven uptake, and a harsher hand.
In our studio, we re-engineered the control system. Wires, drills, and adjustments turned a simple thermostat into a ramp-style profile. Temperature rises slowly, step by step, so fibers have time to adapt.

Observation

The result is yarn that feels resilient, looks alive, and carries color with softness and depth.

Curator’s Note

  • Method: Ramp-style gradual heat profile

  • Observation: Even uptake, preserved softness, reduced stress
